Random Rantings

Random posts and book reviews from a bookworm.

Lisa Kleypas Does It Again

Not a shock, but Lisa Kleypas did it again. She drew me into yet another one of her historical romance books.

Dreaming of You is the second book in The Gamblers of Craven's series by Lisa Kleypas. She did it again with another hit!

Hallmark E-Book Giveaway

Christmas is here a little early for Hallmark Bookworms! On Hallmark's website they are giving away free e-book copies of Christmas In Evergreen by Nancy Naigle. The e-book is also available on Amazon.com but it does cost $5.99, so be sure to get your free copy before time runs out!

If you haven't already seen the movie I suggest looking out for it on Hallmark's TV channel. It is definitely a Christmas Hallmark movie that shouldn't be missed.

Last Yet First Hathaway Book

So, I finally finished The Hathaways series, in reverse as stated in a previous post. Mine Till Midnight was the first book in the series and the last one that I read. It was a lot better than expected and I can definitely see why they have their own scenes throughout the series. Thankyou, Lisa Kleypas, for yet another amazing series!

Losing a Loved One

The holidays seem to be the worst time of the year when it comes to losing a loved one as well as dealing with the pain of losing a loved one. My Father passed away this year, something I will never forget nor get over. In some ways he was my best friend. No one really understands the pain that comes from losing a spouse, child, sibling, etc. until they go through it. Because of that there really aren't many people that you can talk to about the subject who completely understand. Some cities do have group meetings for those who have lost loved ones (provided it's not too far to drive to) and then there are people who are very much solitary and prefer one on one over going to group meetings. There are also people who tend to close up and not wish to speak to anyone about losing their loved one.

Going In Reverse With the Hathaways

So, a while back I felt like reading a historical romance and ended up with Love In the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas. It is the fifth and final book in The Hathaways series by Lisa Kleypas but the synopsis caught my eye, so I dived into it. I loved it so much that I read the fourth book... then the third book... and now I am almost done with the second book, waiting to dive into the first book of the series. Definitely not the best idea to read any series backwards but no regrets here!

Persephone by Kitty Thomas

In search of a Persephone and Hades book I decided to give Persephone by Kitty Thomas a try.

Persephone has good points and bad points. The book is written well but some of the story, such as character personalities, didn't sit too well with me. It could just be me as I've read plenty of Persephone and Hades books. That doesn't mean this book wouldn't fit well with others. For me, I just couldn't get past certain aspects of it. Again, it is a well written book... perhaps just not the best Persephone and Hades themed book for me. Incase some of you get caught offguard like I did, this book is NOT for the faint of heart with it's sexual manner. I did not finish the book due to the scenes that it possessed and being unable to get into the main characters' personalities for Persephone and Hades, which is something I very rarely do.

In search of the next read!

Book Rut Begone!

So, I think I might have actually gotten out of that awful book rut! I tried diving into a book from the Secret Book Santa challenge for the hundedth time. This time it actually worked! So, thankyou Racing Hearts by Candi Heart!

It is such a relief to be out of that awful book rut. That was the longest book rut that I have ever been in. Time to dive into a sea of books!

Lovely Book Rut

Book ruts can be the worst for a bookworm. I am in a big book rut. No matter what book I try to read I can't get into it at all, that includes books from the Secret Book Santa challenge. So, in an attempt to get out of the book rut I started reading fanfics on fanfiction.net. Hopefully that will kick said book rut out!

As for fanfics, I am mostly reading Riverdale fanfics. I am a definite Betty and Jughead shipper but when it comes to fanfics I am all the way Betty and Sweet Pea. If any of you are interested in some good Betty and Sweet Pea fanfics drop a comment below.

Hope the rest of you aren't going through a book rut too!

New V.C. Andrews Book!

V.C. Andrews is one of the authors that I remember the most from my childhood. My Favorite series above all by her is the Hudson series. I've read the series multiple times. The Hudson series is also how I discovered V.C. Andrews, even though she is famously known for Flowers In the Attic.

Catwoman & Stygian Release

Dystopian Bingo Challenge

Hey Bookworms!

For those of you involved in the craziness of Facebook check out the Dystopian Fantasy Bookworms group. Coming up Wednesday, August 1st, there is suppose to be a Dystopian Bingo challenge. Further information hasn't been revealed yet but it definitely sounds exciting! It sounds like there are prizes involved as well. Nothing like a new reading challenge to put a little pep in readers.

Until next week...

Happy reading, Bookworms!

Endless Water, Starless Sky
by Rosamund Hodge

In the last days of the world, the walls of Viyara are still falling, and the dead are rising faster than ever.

Juliet is trapped—ordered by Lord Ineo of the Mahyanai to sacrifice the remaining members of her family, the Catresou, to stave off the end of the world. Though they’re certain his plan is useless, Juliet and her former friend Runajo must comply with Lord Ineo’s wishes—unless they can discover a different, darker path to protecting Viyara.

Romeo is tortured: finally aware that his true love is alive, he is at once elated and devastated, for his actions led directly to the destruction of her clan. The only way to redemption is to offer his life to the Catresou to protect and support them . . . even if it means dying to do so.

Another release on July 24th is also a good day for another group of fans, fans of the 1001 Dark Nights books. For those of you who don't know what 1001 Dark Nights books are, they are short stories by different authors allowing you to be introduced to said authors' books. Envy by Rachel Van Dyken is the latest 1001 Dark Nights' release. Envy is book #9.5 of the Eagle Elite series.

by Rachel Van Dyken

Every family has rules, the mafia just has more....
Do not speak to the bosses unless spoken to.
Do not make eye contact unless you want to die.
And above all else, do not fall in love.
Renee Cassani's future is set.
Her betrothal is set.
Her life, after nannying for the five families for the summer, is set
Somebody should have told Vic Colezan that.
He's a man who doesn't take no for an answer.
And he only wants one thing.
Somebody should have told Renee that her bodyguard needed as much discipline as the kids she was nannying.
Good thing Vic has a firm hand.

Shark Week

Shark Week is just around the corner! Starting July 22nd, sharks will infest the Discovery channel for eight nights. Also, this year is their 30th year running!

Happy reading, Bookworms... and don't forget, don't go into the water alone! 😉

New Releases By P.C. Cast & S.E. Smith

Out of books to read? Of course, that is never the issue for us bookworms, more like too many to read! Two interesting, possibly, books are being released this month. One of the two books was released yesterday.

Penguin Random House Contest

Great news, Bookworms! Penguin Random House is having a giveaway for 100 Great American Reads! The contest is open to United States residents, ages 18 years and older.

Entering is easy. Just fill out the short, sweet and simple entry form here. The contest ends August 31st, 2018. What a great way to kick off the summer and end it too!

What is your favorite classic book of all time? Mine seems to always go back to Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

Christmas In July

It's that time of the year. Time for Hallmark channel's Christmas In July movies event!

What better way to get into the Christmas In July spirit than to read a Christmas themed book? There are plenty of Christmas themed books but Hallmark has one of their very own. Love You Like Christmas by Keri F. Sweet. Interested in Hallmark's Love You Like Christmas movie? Check it out by clicking here. The movie airs July 16th, 2018.

Happy Reading, Bookworms!

Yuri By Roxie Rivera

Made it through the first Secret Book Santa book for the summer season!

It has been quite some time since I read a book from the Her Russian Protector series. I highly recommend the series if you enjoy mobster themed books.

Yuri by Roxie Rivera is the third book in the Her Russian Protector series. The two main characters, Yuri and Lena, are so much alike in ways. They both grew up in harsh environments. Yuri is different from the other male main characters as his world is now part of the higher society. Both, Yuri and Lena, have their own past issues to come to terms with but Lena's past is the main focus of most of the book (for good reason).

Goodreads Latest Android App Update

So, dare I ask, have any of you tried out the Goodreads App for android since they tweaked the app?

I downloaded the app recently after seeing the advertisement for the new updates on Goodreads' website. Based on what I use the app for, which is minimal, the app did appear to run a lot smoother and quicker. It used to be slow at loading pages, etc.

One option that I didn't check out because it isn't something that I would use but looked nice is the option to view notes and highlights from your kindle in the My Books section of the app.

For more info on changes made with the latest update for Goodreads app on android click here.

2. Racing Hearts by Candi Heart
3. Married By Morning by Lisa Kleypas
4. Third Daughter by Susan Kaye Quinn
5. Fire Touched by Patricia Briggs
6. Reign by Meg Jackson
7. Yuri by Roxie Rivera
8. Shark Bite by Naomi Lucas

The Eighth House: Hades & Persephone

For those of you bookworms that love the greek Gods and Goddesses I came across a book that was actually really good. Hades with a backbone and kind heart? Check. Persephone with a kind heart and grows as a person? Check. Decent side characters? Check. It is also noteworthy to mention that Aphrodite was a likable character later on in the book.

The Eighth House: Hades & Persephone by Eris Adderly is the first book in the Flames of Olympos series. Unfortunately, it was published in 2017 (September, I believe) and there has yet to be a second book in the series. Hopefully there will be a second book this year. Definitely looking forward to this series being continued, though.

Weight Gain Smoothies

Just a little FYI for those of you who are trying to gain weight...

When my Father was trying to gain weight we used smoothies and high calorie drinks.

I stumbled across an e-book in Kindle Unlimited for smoothie recipes focused on gaining weight. Weight Gain Smoothies: Invigorating High Calorie Shakes by Danny Gansneder was the best book I read for high calorie smoothie recipes.

Comfort Reread...

Life is one big rollercoaster so sometimes you need something familiar to read. In this case I opted for Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward. An older book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It's nice to jump back into that portion of the series.

Rehvenge has always kept his distance from the Brotherhood—even though his sister is married to a member, for he harbors a deadly secret that could make him a huge liability in their war against the lessers. As plots within and outside of the Brotherhood threaten to reveal the truth about Rehvenge, he turns to the only source of light in his darkening world, Ehlena, a vampire untouched by the corruption that has its hold on him—and the only thing standing between him and eternal destruction.

Latest Reads

Just a quick post. Dealing with a lot of stuff in life right now.

Latest reads recently were Being Free by Sylvia Ryan, Dark Planet Warriors by Ann Carven, and Shiftr Kristin by Ariana Hawkes. All of those books were e-book versions and were e-book freebies from Amazon.com and or part of Kindle Unlimited.

Each book was enjoyable and I definitely plan on continuing to read more of each series. Being Free was the last book in its series but by far my favorite.

Sorry for such a quick post but life is very crazy right now.

Happy Reading, Bookworms!

Love Restored By Carrie Ann Ryan

Yet another e-book freebie stood out among some of the others that I recently downloaded to the kindle. Love Restored by Carrie Ann Ryan hit the mark in a sea of boring e-book freebies lately.

Love Restored is the first book in the Gallagher Brothers series. Love Restored is an ink (tattoo) romance full of drama, suspsense, romance and doesn't lack in laughs here and there either.

Definitely don't read the Gallagher Brothers series if anything vulgar bothers you. If it doesn't then I definitely suggest checking out Love Restored! Not only were the main characters enjoyable but the side characters were as well. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Passion Restored! Follow this link to download the e-book.

Keeping things short yet again, due to life being life. Sorry, bookworms.

Happy Reading!

Love Restored
by Carrie Ann Ryan

Graham Gallagher has seen it all. And when tragedy struck, lost it all. He’s been the backbone of his brothers, the one they all rely on in their lives and business. And when it comes to falling in love and creating a life, he knows what it’s like to have it all and watch it crumble. He’s done with looking for another person to warm his bed, but apparently he didn’t learn his lesson because the new piercer at Montgomery Ink tempts him like no other.
Blake Brennen may have been born a trust fund baby, but she’s created a whole new life for herself in the world of ink, piercings, and freedom. Only the ties she’d thought she’d cut long ago aren’t as severed as she’d believed. When she finds Graham constantly in her path, she knows from first glance that he’s the wrong kind of guy for her. Except that Blake excels at making the wrong choice and Graham might be the ultimate temptation for the bad girl she’d thought long buried.

Any Riverdale fans?

Riverdale became a new favorite show of mine. Season 2 is iffy but possibly getting better. If you're a bughead (betty and jughead) fan like me then it's possible you already hit fanfiction.net before the new episodes started. While browsing fanfics I came across an interesting ship. Betty and Sweet Pea. Curiosity killed the cat so I checked out the 'Betty x Sweat Pea' fics. Have to say outside of the show I'm on board for that ship. There aren't that many fanfics of them on there and few that are good but it's worth looking into if any of you are curious.

A couple of the writers have great writing skills.

If any of you have read the Archie comics do you think Riverdale follows the comics well?

Here's to season 2 picking up!

Unexpected Gifts and Unexpected Good Read

Unexpected Gifts by Elena Aitken was a pot of gold find in an array of hit or miss e-book freebies on Amazon.com. It is still available here to download for free.

If you enjoy Hallmark Christmas movies then chances are you will enjoy Unexpected Gifts as it was similar to one of those movies. I enjoyed the e-book from beginning to end.

Unexpected Gifts is part of a series, Castle Mountain Lodge.

Unexpected Gifts by Elena Aitken
Christmas represents everything Andi Williams is supposed to have, and doesn't. Running away to a remote mountain lodge in the Canadian Rockies, sounds like the perfect way to escape, until a mix-up finds her sharing a villa with sexy, rough around the edges, Colin Hartford.

Colin's determination to enjoy the holiday he’s missed for the last five years, sweeps Andi into a season of joy that she’s not sure she’s ready for.
